Osmington White Horse Walk
...A delightful circular walk visiting the picturesque village of Sutton Poyntz and the famous Osmington White Horse with King George as its rider. The walk involves one quite steep climb which is rewarded with good views over to the Weymouth coast. There are several stiles and gates and some lower stretches can be muddy in wet weather. 1. Park in Church Lane, Osmington, Continue down Church Lane until you reach a signpost on the left marked Sutton Poyntz 1.5 miles. Take this path.
2. The path is well marked with yellow way markers and as the main path swings to the right to some distant buildings, make sure you go straight ahead through the gate and follow the grass track straight on to a stile.
3. Continue straight across the fields and upon reaching a gate, cross the farm track and go through a second gate following the fence line which is now on your left.
4. The path across the field starts to drop slightly toward the wooded area which can be seen ahead and eventually leads to a pedestrian gate on your left which leads to Sutton Poyntz. The path is marked with a yellow way marker.
5. The footpath goes through a rough grass area to a kissing gate which leads directly to the the roadway in Sutton Poyntz. Turn right up the road passing Mill House on your left and Springhead public house on your right. At the pumping station turn right.
6. From the pumping station watch out for the Public Footpath sign on your left which is the start of the climb to the top of East Hill. The path leads across a field with a stile. Head diagonally across the next field to join the wide track which you will see in the distance. This track will take you to the top of the hill and the Dorset Ridgeway Path. From the ridge there are excellent views of the coast and Weymouth bay.
7. Turn right along the ridge and at the next gate you can make a short detour to visit the White Horse which is now on the hillside below you.
8. Return to the main path and at the signpost marked Osmington 3/4m turn right down the hillside . This path will take you back to Church Lane and the end of the walk.
